Image of Kino Lorber Acquires North American Rights to Mark Cousins' Nonfiction Epic 'The Story of Documentary Film' article

Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to Mark Cousins’ 'The Story of Documentary Film', an expansive 16-volume history of the medium that examines over a century of global nonfiction cinema. An essential follow-up to Cousins’ 2011 opus 'The Story of Film: An Odyssey', 'The Story of Documentary Film' made its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where the festival presented chapter 1, “The Beginning”. The film was also an official selection at the 2026 Berlinale, which screened chapters 1 through 4, and most recently at Cannes Classics, which premiered chapters 6 and 7. Kino Lorber will release 'The Story of Documentary Film' on all platforms later this year.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to J.M. Harper’s 'Soul Patrol', an intimate, immersive documentary that reunites the first all-Black special operations team fifty years after serving in the Vietnam War. Based on the bestselling memoir by Ed Emanuel, 'Soul Patrol' made its world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where Harper was awarded the US Documentary Competition Directing Award. Following Sundance, the film was an official selection at the True/False Film Festival, Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, DC/DOX, and was recently awarded the top documentary prize at the 2026 Sarasota Film Festival. Kino Lorber is planning an awards season theatrical release this fall followed by a digital, educational, and home video release.

Zeitgeist Films in association with Kino Lorber has acquired North American rights to Andrius Blazevicius’ 'How to Divorce During the War', a beautifully directed portrait of a couple navigating the dissolution of their marriage during the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. The film made its world premiere as part of the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where Blazevicius received the Directing Award. Zeitgeist Films is planning a theatrical release at New York’s IFC Center this summer with a national rollout to follow.

The film made its world premiere at the 2026 True/False Film Festival and will next screen as part of the Berkshire International Film Festival and DOC NYC Spring Selects. Kino Lorber is planning a theatrical release on July 3 at the IFC Center in New York, followed by a digital, educational, and home video release.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to Rafael Manuel’s surreal and stylized debut feature 'Filipiñana', executive produced by Jia Zhangke. Winner of the Special Jury Award for Creative Vision at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, the film will next make its European premiere at the Berlinale on February 15. 'Filipiñana' will be released theatrically by Kino Lorber later this year followed by a digital, educational, and home video release.

Kino Lorber has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Arnaud Desplechin’s stirring melodrama 'Two Pianos', starring François Civil ('Beating Hearts'), Nadia Tereszkiewicz ('The Crime is Mine'), and Charlotte Rampling. The film made its World Premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and will make its New York Premiere at Rendez-Vous with French Cinema on March 5, with Desplechin in attendance. 'Two Pianos' will be released theatrically by Kino Lorber this spring followed by a digital, educational, and home video release.

Kino Lorber has acquired North American distribution rights to David Borenstein and Pavel Talankin’s award-winning documentary 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' from international sales agent DR Sales. A daring work of nonfiction cinema that offers a rare glimpse inside Russia, the film made its World Premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, where it was awarded the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award, and has gone on to screen at film festivals around the world including DOC NYC, CPH:DOX, and Sheffield Doc Fest. The film is one of 15 selected for this year’s Oscars® Shortlist for Best Documentary Feature Film. 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' will be released by Kino Lorber in select theaters and streaming on the Kino Film Collection beginning January 22, with an educational and home video release to follow.
